Just pulled the CVT cover and there was definitely gear oil in there, although it was not obvious where it was coming from. Drained it, most of the 4 oz. I had put in was still present for duty. Refilled it, adding a rubber O-ring to both of the bolts (fill and drain) and snugging them down real good. Have it running on the center stand now at about 2500 rpm, enough to spin the back wheel a bit, and am waiting to see if the leak is still there. After 10 minutes or so of that, plan to re-snug the bolts and see if I can detect any loosening. Anybody have thoughts regarding my using the O-rings for extra seal?

If the O rings are good, I don't think its necessary, but you could put them in and see how it works. You can check for leaks, but I would just be careful not to over tighten those bolts.

You may have a leaking oil seal? check it out. Attachments:

As it turns out the O-rings deformed and squished out of position, so I went to a flat faucet-type rubber washer on the drain bolt, and just the metal washer on the fill bolt (which, one hopes, is above the water line and therefore the least likely suspect). Ran it again on the stand after that, and took a short run around the neighborhood with the covers still off, and no drops on the driveway, so put it all back together and found a piece of wood to knock.
Wow, by the way: does the CVT make some godawful noises when those covers are off. Sounds like a metal trash can full of rocks. Just about to go on another run, hopefully the noise level will be back to normal.
RICHARD: is that oil seal inside the drain hole? Didn't see anything that looked like rubber on mine, but then I wasn't looking all that close.

I think the motor oil seal is behind your varaiotor, and the gear oil seal is behind your clutch. yours may be different because of being the 244cc engine. That noise your hearing my be your roller weights, did you have the varaitor off?

Only thing I removed was the CVT cover (and the plastic cover and small metal bracket that also have to come off to remove the CVT cover). The oil I found inside the cover seemed to be localized toward the back, where the fill and drain plugs are, and what I did today has APPARENTLY stopped the drip. I took a longer ride after my last post and no drops on the driveway afterward. I went up to a big empty parking lot to practice cone weaving in anticipation of the MVD test, and it seemed to me when moving at very slow speed, like maybe 5mph, the noise from the rear end was rather loud, but maybe I was just focused on it. Nothing I removed, tinkered with, or replaced, should have made any difference in what's going on in the rear end, and at higher speeds it hums along like a Chinese knockoff of a Swiss watch, not noisy at all. Oh, and an update to something I posted earlier (probably in another thread): this time the two long bolts that hold the CVT cover in place threaded up and tightened very nicely. Last time I was almost thinking I might have stripped one of them, but not so. As AlleyOop commented somewhere along the way, removing and reinstalling that cover gets much easier with repetition, and my silicone solution to keeping the darn gasket where it belongs seems to be working out well so far.

Glad to hear you fix leak, the noise you hear in low speeds are the roller weights, that's normal because the roller weights aren't rolling all the way up the ramps, you get less noise the faster you go, in that case sliders work better in the low speeds.

That's reassuring, I'm hoping I NEVER have to actually get inside that CVT assembly! Rollers? Sliders? Is that two different alternatives for the same purpose, as in replace rollers with sliders and get less noise? Not a job I would care to take on unless there are performance benefits beyond just less noise.
Still no oil droplets this morning, so yeah, I think I fixed the leak once and for all. 500 miles on the scoot now, and really enjoying boogying around town on it. Am tracking mileage on this fillup, just to see how it does, but anything better than the 25 I get on my truck is all gravy. Surprised me to read in the manual that it needs premium gas, though; wouldn't have thought that about a glorified lawn mower engine.

Ellpee, great to hear your catching those darn gremlins 1 by 1. Had no doubt that the Techs here would walk you through them.
The roller/slider thing is not that big a deal to do just takes a little time to find the weight that works best and it will make a difference in pick up & top speed. As for the noise, I would want to open it up just to see if everything inside is as it should be.
The gurus will explain the how to's better than I (1 reason I don't like to give advise).
As for the gas thing there are different octane rating systems and most scoots here run fine on regular (with a little seafoam to get rid of the crap ethanol leaves behind).
Good luck & good scootin.

The difference in the roller vs sliders, the sliders would be a smoother take off with less noise.

Guess if/when the time comes I'll consider switching over to sliders. I'm not much into laying rubber, but if it's a part that'll eventually need replacing, might as well upgrade.
Gassed up just now, just shy of 75 mpg. Woohoo! Noise factor was pretty much what it has been since Day 1, so not going to sweat it for the present. Made myself a little logo decal for the back of the trunk that says "Hardly-Davidson Motorcycles" -- hope I don't get my butt kicked down in the biker bar part of town, just thought it was funny.

Is it noise when its idling? or just when your accelerating? If someone had the varaitor off before and wasn't careful when putting it back on, you can have those roller turned in there, I know my first time putting my varaitor back on sound like some grinding a bunch of bolts, had to take off and start over make sure I was holding the varaitor together until it was pushed all the way back in place. Or the rollers may have flats spots on them, if that's the case they need replaced in the near future.

No, just at the beginning of the acceleration cycle, up to maybe 8-10 mph tops, after which it quiets down and runs real smooth all the way up to 60, which is as far as I've taken it. It was just particularly noticeable the other day when I was intentionally holding it below 10mph while practicing cone weaving. From what I've read here and seen on the slider change video, I'm guessing it's just the rollers doing what they're supposed to. Scoot came new out of the box, one mile on it, so nobody should have had the variator off/open since it left the factory. Probably just my newbie paranoia, though I see I've now been promoted all the way to sophmore.
