I guess I could see this one coming. I came to work this morning and the old girl was running like a champ. However, tonight I got about 3 miles from the office and there was a significant change in the engine and now it won't idle but will run at higher throttle. It sounds like it's "sucking air". Almost like the plug is out. I've checked the hoses and everything is connected as far as I can see. What could this be? PS - Keep in mind my other thread about the oil leak. Could it be related? PPS - I've noticed my fuel economy is getting terrible, about 45mpg. Thanks! - Adam

Starting to sound like a blown head gasket which would also explain the oil leak. Time to shut her down, strip the plastics and find the problem/s.

First check your compression, take the plug out and if you do not have a compression gauge use your finger. Stick you finger in the Plug hole and OPEN the Throttle all the way and hold it open then crank it. If it blows your finger off the hole you should have enough compression. If you just fell a little pressure you have a problem.
If low put a teaspoon of oil into plug hole and do it again if it is better then its your rings if sameo sameo then start checking for head gasket leak seeing as how your also looseing oil. Alleyoop

Might be a cracked intake elbow sucking air or the plastic insulator between the engine and the intake elbow...if it doesn't idle it you can't check it with spray water.. so you have to get in there and see what gives...
They can often be repaired with red high temperature silicone .. I had one go like that some years ago and it is still running with a patch

I think I found the culprit. I still had compression so that was good news. So, I looked at the intake/carb and found a large crack in the intake manifold. There is also a lot of oil around this area. Is is possible that oil is coming out of the crack? Take a look at the picture and let me know what you recommend. Thanks! BTW - I tested my auto enricher while I had access to it and it's working fine. Would this cracked manifold have affected my gas mileage? Attachments:

Yep!! For sure it'll run horrible with that huge crack replace it, but on the oil not so sure? It does sound reasonable that with that much air sucking in you could get oil blowing by also.
For sure once you get that replaced we'll see.

Thanks, JR. FYI - After I let it set for a few days it wouldn't even start up. I'll assume that this is the cause for that too. I'll replace it and we'll see if that fixes all my problems.

You might try fixing the intake elbow with high temperature red silicone...it often works well if you can get it on the inside and outside and let it set-up overnight...

Thanks, Sprocket! I was able to order one for $9 including shipping. If I had some red silicone lying around though I would certainly try it.
I should have the new part on Thursday. I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks!
