Rear Axle / shaft or bearing ? By liammcl (Read 883 times)

Hi,
I have inherited a moped (2002 Italian Siamoto Birdie 50cc)
which has been stood in someones garage for 11 years !

Amazingly, cleaning the spark plug and carbs have sprung it back into life.

However, there is a wobble in the back axle, it moves in and out, and less so to the side.

Is this a pretty major fix? bearings etc?

with the wheel mounted does it still have that play ?

Thanks for replying John,
I've found that it is indeed the bearings, the cage had totally disintergrated
...dunno where the bearings have gone..
this is all that is left of the cage (in the foreground)

and there is no bearings at all in there
...I didn't take anything out...that is how it was !

I have to try and work out what is supposed to be in there...1 set of bearings or two etc

The splines have small chunks missing too...it has had better days !

maybe the old owner had it opened and could not fix it .

ps Just in passing it was parked up, because the lady banged into something and broke the throttle casing on the handlebar...

What I thought was the bearing cage, isn't !
There were no loose bearings anywhere...

Comparing the axle and cage ,
there is no room for ballbearing to go inside it and the shaft.

Anywho, it is good to tinker and see how all the bits fit together if nothing else.

just an update...

A bit of a result...there is a stamp "hk222812"
which is this

so I am getting there.

I'm guessing that a new one of these needle bearing cage would do the trick on the clutch side, the wheel side has ball bearings

I hope all that's needed is the needle cage...
