The names of these parts are unknown at this point. What would cause the small gear that pops out to turn the large gear to be stuck? The starter motor turns but the small gear does not emerge to connect with large gear for starting. It worked for a while... does the wearing down of the battery have an effect...the small gear only emerges when it's turned at a certain speed by the starter motor?

Have you checked the charge on the battery? If the battery is weak the starter will turn but not engage, you need a full charge of 12.5Vdc or better.

That gear is called a BENDIX and yes if the battery is weak it will not spin the BENDIX fast enough for it to be thrown out and grab the teeth on the Fan Pulley and you will most likely hear a grinding or some noise. Alleyoop
