What's the best way to check a CDI? Is there a video somewhere? I posted this on my other thread and got some great help from y'all, but I haven't quite got it figured out yet... My scooter loses electrical power at least two to three times every morning on my way to work (about 8 miles one way) and on the way home. I flick the kill switch on and off real fast and it fires right back up. It also is a major pain to start when I try to leave work. This seems to be because of the heat. I've tried three different plug wire/cores and it hasn't changed things. When it wouldn't start yesterday, I pulled the plug/core wire off and replaced it with one of the other ones. It fired right up! All the new parts people around here are crooks and I really don't want to have to deal with them if possible. I know it's not the fuel, fuel filter, air filter, etc. When she runs, she runs like a champ! I have a better than average multimeter and would like to check the CDI myself before trying to get a new one, if that is my problem. Does anyone have a pin-out diagram for the CDI and what readings I should be getting? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance again!
Bobby

I cannot help with the values out of the CDI, but since you mentioned you hit the Killswitch off and on and it starts. Why not just pull the Killswitch wire off the CDI and see if that is the problem which would then mean something may be loose by the switch and at times grounds it out. Alleyoop

Bobby testing a CDI is all but impossible, no reliable specs and one needs other testing equipment to check it anyway.
Alley made a very good suggestion, if the kill switch is intermittently grounding out the CDI will not fire. The way you kill your engine is actually by grounding out the CDI through the key switch and the engine kill switch. In fact key switches can do the same thing short out and keep the CDI from firing.
Set her up on the center stand fire her up and leave her out in the hot sun at idle and see if it will cut off by just sitting there and heating up. CDI's have been know to cut out when they get hot and they are cheap and easy to replace.
While it's running giggle the kill switch and the key switch and see if it'll die? Also you may have to strip it and go through the wires and see if the engine kill wire (usually black/white) is rubbing anywhere and grounding out to the frame, all possibilities.

My scoot guy showed up yesterday and put a new CDI in for me. My scoot runs like new!!! John, I'll get back with you on the orange CDIs. I'm going to need a spare. I just started a new job and I have to wait a couple of weeks to get some $ on my debit card.
Thanks again for all the help, y'all!

Thanks! It's been one HELL of a nightmare lately. I bought the thing new (1.9 miles on it) on March 1st from Boulevard Pawn Shop here for $850. Ran great but after I had it for about three and a half months, I hit a bump and the spring from the idle screw popped off. This link will tell you the rest of the story: easternnc.app.bbb.org/complaint/view/11076482/c/x8pc7vAnyway, it has cost me $140 and a bunch of scary rides to get it straightened out. Reporting the pawn shop to the BBB and Angie’s List didn’t get me anything back, but I hope it can help someone else avoid getting screwed like I did. Y’all be careful with who you deal with! Bobby
