CVT cooling

When riding last month in Bryson City with my Peirspeed R9i tug and side car I managed to get stuck on a dirt road and in less than a minute toasted the CVT. We have installed a new unit but I want to know how to improve cooling of CVT. It presently has a 2' tube bringing in air to cool but that is not efficient. I am thinking of removing the hose and making a hardware cloth or screen wire cover to cover the tube entrance to enhance air delivery to the fan. IceBear has a cover with holes but no tube. Comments appreciated.

There are those who ride with a cvt side cover full of holes or missing. They get dirt in there but they stay a lot cooler. Mine has big holes cut around the clutch for venting and I live on a dirt road. No problems yet with cooling or excess dirt in 3 years. I would do it again too if I were to get another 150. Some of the racing type variators don't even have fins as they have to be run out in the open. Its your call on cooling options/

Thanks, jct842. I have heard of the method that you mention being used before. The 2' tube is going to go and I may cover the entryway with 1/4" hardware cloth as my best option. Most of my riding is local here in the NGA hills but the extra weight of the sidecar might be causing the CVT to work a litle harder. It runs at 50-55 mph for the most part but the hills can slow it down to 40 at times.

As I see it the biggest hurt to the cvt cooling is not the entrance of air but the ability to exit the air.

Now that is a good point and one I had not considered. I have noted that the air discharge is not very big.

Problem solved with not much work done. Took the breather cover off my IB Ruckus trike and it fit the R9i unit perfectly plus already has holes in it. When I said that I baked the CVT I misspoke. What I toasted was the clutch!!!! Big Time!!! Thanks for youy input, JCT842. It was much appreciated. The IB is used only on the place, is no longer tagged,so that cover will not be missed.

Decided that the IB cover would not let in enough air, holes too small. Changed it out and cut a piece of 1/4" hardware cloth to take its place. Should let in enough air now..
