I have noticed the little tabs which protrude from under the top of the gas cap that lock it in place in the hole in the filler tube tend to move too far to one side and the closure is not good on the tank filler tube. Has anybody else noticed this or can I possibly have a defective gas cap?

You can try and bending the little tabs up or down. The reason is the tabs are going past the stops on the part that you screw it onto the gas tank. You sould be able to bend them up or down depedning and where the stops are on the screw on piece on the gas tank.
