A fellow 50cc friend of mine removed 3 rollers from his scoot instead of buying difrent weights. He is running 8 gram rollers for a total of 27 grams. The question is--- What type of damage (if any) can happen with only running 3 rollers??? I was thinking this is a bad idea but after 400 or so miles his scoot runs like a champ (Although reving high) He removed every other stock roller so the weight is even but I still think it's a bad idea. Am I wrong?

As long as the variator is balanced and the rollers are very close in weight and he has them in the right order it shouldn't cause any harm but myself if I want to change I use all of them and change the gram value.
Now two other things come to mind one if he's using 8 gram weights he'a at 24g not 27 or is using 9g = 27g.
The other thing is when he removed the 3 weights he increased the RPM's of the engine by 500 X 3 = 1500 rpm. These little engines even with all of them in will push up to 7K+ easily and yea it may be running fine now but with the added RPM with the weight removal it's short term and with a lot of the 50cc scooters no tach so he doesn't have a clue as to how high he's pushing up the RPM's?
Better to run a 50cc at no more than 7200 RPM if you want it to run long.

Thanks JR. Thats what I was thinking too. I may be wrong about the exact weight 8/9 but, Removing 3 of six stock rollers just doesent sound like a good idea for a daily driver to me. He has the performance but like you said and I was worried about, the long term over reving maybe an issue. I recomended a chepo tach and just getting a set of rollers that are close to the total weight. It's a comprimise of top speed and take off but, overdoing either can be a recipe for disaster IMO.
