Been working 60+ hours a week for the last 2 months or so. Haven't had a lot of time to ride my scoot. I have started it a couple of times a week with no issues. I went yesterday to ride it after finally getting a couple of days off. When I pressed the start button the starter made a loud singing, whining noise and did not engage the engine. I checked all connections and fuses with no difference made. I have another identical bike that I use for parts and decided to pull the starter off it. When I tried to crank the motor with the different starter in it the same results happened. I thought that was odd. So I put the original starter in the parts bike and wired it directly to the battery. It turned the motor over normally. The other starter was the same. I then reinstalled the starter back into my main scoot and wired directly to the battery. The same singing, whining sound occurred with no engine engagement made. This tells me that the problem is internal. Does anyone have any idea what the heck it could be. The motor itself has been running good with no problems for a long time. Please help. Thanks.

If the gears on the STARTER itself are good then It is either the STARTER IDLER GEAR inside that turns the STARTER CLUTCH or the STARTER CLUTCH itself. Alleyoop CLICK THE PICTURE TO EXPAND IT FOR A BETTER LOOK SEE:

Man this looks like a major job. Taking the cover off is no problem. Removing gears is a whole different ball game. will they be a pain to remove or should I just forget about this motor all together. I have another motor that I can put in there off my parts bike. It has 10,000 miles on it. It turned over normally as I stated in my post. Don't know if I should go through the effort to remove the gears if it will be easier to put the other motor in it.

The Idler Gear on top once you take the cover off you just pull it right out. Then you can check if either of the two gears are spinning on the shaft, if so get a whole new Idler gear setup. The Clutch is a little more work since you have to take the stator out and flywheel but not hard. Putting in a another motor is much harder and many more hours to readjust everything on it. Alleyoop

Thanks alleyoop. I will try your suggestion. Perhaps you or another forum member could provide a link if you know of one where I can get the necessary gears if need be. Don't want to pull them out of the other motor if I don't have to. Also is the stator reversed threaded?. Meaning is the nut removed clockwise as compare to counterclockwise. I think I read some where that either the stator or clutch nut is that way, I just cant remember which.

The Idler gear just pull it out and you can test the Starter gear it should only turn one way freely and not want to turn freely the other way. If you can turn it freely both ways then all you need is a new Clutch which is attached to the gear. And yes the nuts are reversed.
What motor is in there a LINHAI or a HELIXI and what is it a 250 or 260 vog etc.. Alleyoop

The idler gear appears to be good. The starter clutch behind the flywheel I'm not sure about. I am going to pull it. There are 3 bolts that look like Allen head or star head going thru the flywheel. If I remove these bolts will the flywheel come off or am I going to need a puller?. I installed a starter when I opened up the crankcase and jumped it off with a battery just to see what was going on. The starter turned the idler gear which in turn spun the gear behind the flywheel all the while making the same singing, whining sound. I pulled the idler gear and they were not spinning freely on the shaft. So it is good, The motor did not turn over during this process and the flywheel did not turn. I am going to pull the starter clutch as soon as I find out if I need a puller. Thanks.

With the info gleaned from this site and the help of alleyoop I have repaired the starter clutch on my Aleous 300. It wasn't easy but I learned a lot in doing it. I took the opportunity while the bike was tore down to do some general maintenance on the scoot. Valves, Lines, Coolant, Oil were all done. Took it for a little ride this evening and it ran beautifully. I am a happy camper. I'm off this weekend and a cruisin I will go. This scooter is a blast to ride and I cant wait till Friday. This site is awesome.
