I just installed grip heater elements to my Jonway YY250T and also did tutorial with pictures. I did it using Finnish language and tried to translate it to English
Yesterday it was pretty rainy day and nothing to do. So I started to install my grip heater elements. Then it is much nicer to ride when cold autumn arrive. Grip heaters are like air condition in car. Once you have it you don't want to lose it. You just want it in every vehicle you will have.
There are two types of grip heaters
a) Grips where is built in grip heater elements. These are easier to install, but personally I don't like them. Usually they are much thicker than original grips. But there is positive side in these. There is always switch with 5 or even 7 steps. It is easier to control the heat for hands.
Usually price is 3 to 5 times more than just grip heater elements.
b) Then there is just grip heater elements which you install under the original grip. These are a little harder to install but not impossible for anyone. In these there is usually only 1 or 2 different steps for heating control. Price is usually low. 1 step on-off heater elements from ebay 6-10 usdollar with shipping.
In this tutorial I will install those grip heater elements.
At first there is grip and handlebar weight.
First we remove grip from left hand side. Remove weight.
Then we start removing grips. Grip is usually glued so it hold good. But removing is not impossible at all. You just need a thin screw driver and push it between grip and bar. Then spray some grease or teflonfluid in there just next to screw driver. Do this in couple of different place. Now you have greased it good and you can start wobbling grip in both direction and at similar time start to pull it. Nice and slowly it will be removed.
When you got removed that grip, use some break cleaner to remove all grease from bar and from inside the grip. You can't glue new grip heater there if there is grease.
Then do the same thing with throttle hand grip. Now this is a little different because there is this plastic thing between grip and bar. In this plastic grip you connect throttle wire. I noticed that it is easier to remove grip from this plastic when you remove the whole system from bar and throttle wire. In that way you don't also break chinese plastic ;D
You can use same method with screwdriver, grease and break cleaner.
After removing grip you can install that plastic thing back. It is easier to install element and grip over that when it is on it's place.
Now we start installing grip heater elements.
Left hand grip is directly touching metal bar. And throttle hand side grip is touching that plastic thing. So in throttle hand side you install element over that plastic thing and it is not contacting metal bar. That plastic is like insulation and most heat will go to your hand. But left hand side you install that element directly to metal bar and you should put some electric tape first over that bar or else most heat will absorb into this cold metal element and you will feel left hand much colder than right hand.
You can put coulple of rounds that electric tape but not much more or it is impossible to put that grip back on. For this tape there is also another reason. Now your element can't touch accidentally to ground (negative pole).
There is tape in another side of grip heater element. You can just tape it over the bar. When you tape it measure good place for elements. There is connection point with wires and element. You should install element so that a little wiring also goes under grip. So that connection point is not in 90 degree angle or they will broke someday. Also align that element so that the wiring will go under your grip. Wiring should be as invisible as much they can be.
After left grip you do the same with right hand grip. Remember that throttle grip is moving. So you have to pay a little more attention for installing. You don't want to see broken wire after couple of weeks. Let enought loose wire so you don't break wire or the connecting point with wire and element.
When the elements are installed you can put the grips back on. Grips must be glued somehow so they don't just get loose when you ride 70mph. You don't want to find your self in an accident.
First clean everything with break cleaner.
Then you can buy some special glue for grips. Or you can just talk nice to your girlfriend and borrow her hairspray for a while
Hairspray is good for this. When you use it a lot it gives you 20 to 40 seconds time to wobble grip back on and then it acts like a glue. And it will stay good. But remember, you have to be fast and you have to do it with attention. If you don't put it on before it works like glue you have to do it all again. And then element might also go loose. And then you can't wobble as good because element moves also. You might have to use some fast glue to put your element first on so it does not move. And try to put grip again with hairspray. At first time it might be hard, but second time it will be easy job. Just don't scare. Be a man and do this with attitude and fast and you will be winner.
Fast push and similar wobble.
Grip back on and wiring under the bar.
Another view angle to see better how the wiring is.
And put on the bar weights.
After this you want to put your wires hide. Use some time to put them good. So they don't scrub broken or touch ground.
You only have to put wires to the battery anymore. I recommend to use relay and fuse.
I already before installed 12v output with fuse and relay and connected these wires with 12v output wiring.
Use relay or you might forget to shut down your grip heaters and next time when you want to drive your battery will be dead.
Big picture of my wiring.
My wiring connected to 12v outlet.
Left hand side there was switch and I found good place for it. Direct rain can't touch it and it is pretty invisible. Maybe later I will change this switch for better quality switch.
Another picture
And another.
Now you are ready and you can enjoy with big smile when cold autumn arrives
