Question, I'm working on a 50cc scoot that the starter drive will not stay engauged with the flywheel gear long enough to start the engine. In other words when you push the start button you hear the drive engauge the flywheel, it turns the motor about one 10th of a revolution than it spits back out and just spins outside the flywheel teeth. I have tried a new starter drive, new starter, new flywheel face plate, replaced the starter drive bushings and still the same problem. Any one else have this type of problem or have a clue?

have you check the battery? and when checking it check the grounds they should be clean and tight follow the black wire from the battery to the frame clean the paint off under where the cable bolts to the frame and follow the ground from there to the motor and make sure it is connect to a solid metal part of the motor

Justbuggin2 is right, I think you replaced parts that are not the problem. I think your battery is weak and or to small AMP WISE. The Starter has to spin the BENDIX fast enough so it slides out and engages the teeth on the fan pulley and turns as long as the starter is activated. The bendix has a spring in side to make it retract when it is not spinning fast enough. Alleyoop

listen to the guys , I would check the battery voltage while cranking or try it with a booster pack . See if it corrects the problem , if it does charge or replace the battery .

[replyingto=tvnacman]tvnacman[/replyingto]Swapped out the parts because I had them laying around. Also swapped out the battery with a larger one from my 250 scoot. Worked slightly better but still not what it should be. My first thoughts when I started this were also about the battery and wiring. Battery wires are very skimpy little things. Maybe I should try running some new battery wires and replacing the starter solenoid? Have already check grounds. Only thing left is the wiring.

[replyingto=tvnacman]tvnacman[/replyingto]It looks like it's the starter drive itself. Took one out of another scoot that came by yesterday and put it this scoot, all worked great. Took the not working drive and put it in the 2nd scoot... no start! So I have 2 starter drives (1 original, 1 new replacement) that don't work. Anybody have even a good used one??
