Ah, apparently great minds don't ALWAYS think alike. At this point I'm not (I hope) going to get into the variator anyway, so not an issue, but if/when I do have to pull that apart I'll inspect the roller slots and the sides of the pulley and maybe post here again about what I find.

If for example you have scratches on the Variator, the belt will start to fray on the sides and pretty soon it will break. There is a lot of heat created in the CVT and everything gets really hot and it will go. Alleyoop

i agree that you dont want deep sratches in the belt side but it does not need to be polish like a mirror ether

Doesn't take deep scratches for the belt to start the top material which is woven to start to fray. Hit it with some sandpaper :# and that is what your doing, putting in tiny scratchs in the metal. As the belt moves up and down on the now rough surface the top material on the belt will start to fray. Alleyoop

Well, assuming my impact wrench arrives today as promised, will get into this over the weekend. Plan is to remove the bell and rough-sand the pads, blow out all crud, put the bell back on and see if it behaves better below 10mph. I was out again yesterday weaving the cones and whatnot, and the jerking and chattering at low speed was still very evident and disconcerting. Seems less noticeable the first few minutes in the morning, then worse as things heat up.
Don't plan initially to dismantle the clutch sufficiently to grease the pivot points as suggested in some of your previous posts, but wonder if just spraying them with a little silicone or teflon might help. Clearly I wouldn't want to get any of it on the pads or the inside of the cone, but a wee, careful spritz right on the pivot key points ... any thoughts about that?
