I really don't know what the world is coming to but I had a trojan/virus hit my computer this morning about 5:30 a.m. I finally had to go to Microsoft support and got it out at about 12:00 noon. This one is serious from two stand points, it totally blocks you from even accessing the Internet except if you get lucky and get on (which I did) safe mode system networking mode. The other thing that makes this one bad to me is very offensive and it's telling you that your computer has been locked by the FBI due to the fact you've tried to access very bad pornography the illegal kind. Of course you can pay and they'll make your computer well and get the FBI off of your case, yea right. Dang people even use the FBI logo. Also what a lot of people don't know is there are a lot of free tools provided by Microsoft to remove this junk if you know how to get to them and use them and this is what cleaned my computer: .microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> .microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspxThis is a good system guys and again free so watch out for the latest thing like this, the Microsoft tech said this one is spreading like a wildfire and their phone is ringing off the wall with people needing help. Yep, just get MSN ESSENTIALS Security and all the virus and malware comes with it. That is what I have on both of my computers and it is GREAT.

That's what I use Alley but the tech said this virus was very tough to deal with. They also told me that they were helping people with other antivirus software that were having just as much trouble.
Seems to me some people have very little to do when creating such things?

That scanner is just a subset of the full blown one that comes with the product. That is why it is only good for 10days. They want you to buy the full blown one.

my brother has been a MAC man for years and years
he bugs everyone in the family to get a mac
and those that can afford it , do
i cant afford it so i have to keep dealing with
virus, trojans , etc etc
some day maybe ill get a MAc

And which Linux are you using? I have had some free discs that can run live or be loaded. My favorite was Xandros but they have stopped publishing. So now I am back on Windows.
One of my favorite past times was games, so I had to keep MS going over the years.
My problem with Linux has always been the need to go to the command line and know the commands to do what I needed to do. On one machine I have Windows, Xandros, and Pardus. Just gave up all the tricks to keep things running.
So which do you have running the escapes the command line efforts.

JR, I hope you were not too badly hit. In March I got hit on my new laptop and by the time my local shop had cleared the problems they had also lost most of my files.
Fortunately I had a back up system working on my old laptop and was able to recover most all files. Problem was a 3 to 4 month loss of data as I had not back up system on my new laptop. I do now. I copied down your link to safety from MS. So for that there is a thanks from me.

I bought one from HP and it updates every 5 minutes to keep all of your stuff. Remember if you get hit with a virus like this one can generally access the internet in the safe mode on your computer and get a lot of free help from MS on the help site including that malaware and virus removal tool. I have my backup system setup to backup any NEW UPDATED files every Sunday at 3AM, so If something happens I only loose one week of any file that was updated during that week. My MSN ESSTENTIALS is setup to update itself whenever any updates are available as well as any updates to the operating system.

JR, my backup system is WD Smartware and it runs constantly. Yes it is a separate HD that attaches to the USB port. It does a good job of saving. My only complaint is that it seems to be coded for the particular PC it was installed on. So if the PC fails completely I am not sure if it is helpful. Thinking about a different one that can be picked up and put on a different system to recover files. I was lucky in that my old laptop could still work so I used a memory stick and download to it then put that in the new laptop and uploaded to the file system.

Don't have that problem with the HP hardriive and I don't think I'll ever run out of space on it.

Unfortunately this is a sad and increasingly hard to avoid part of life on the internet  There are a few things you can do to avoid it or minimise the impact. Leaving aside the common ones like having a firewall and antivirus (as I wouldn't insult your intelligence, I know you already will all do this and granny doesn't like eggs) there is one particularly interesting approach that has served me well. I run a second version of windows within a virtual pc application. My main work desktop runs windows 7, when I want to go on the internet I open up "Microsoft Virtual PC" and select a operating system off the list (I have a few different ones on there for work but by and large you can run nearly anything that you could normally install on your pc like linux) and it then opens this within a window. I know it sounds a little confusing, but you basically have a computer within a computer, so should the 'little' computer get a virus you simply delete the image and restore from a backup which is as simple as cutting and pasting a file, and your main 'big' computer is unaffected. If I get time and people are interested I can post some pictures of it in action. There are other programs out there that can do a similar job, vmware make a free program that does this. It's basically just an extra level of protection but if you have an unused windows licence or can cope with linux \ want to play with linux it works a treat  |

Had the virus hit me in the kister and then it wen't to my wifes lap top. Took 3 days to get back in order . PIA. But I finally got back on.
