Hi, I got this 1999 Honda SGX50 as a non-runner due to engine being flooded with fuel, I cleaned the carb and cleared the engine and it's running sweet.
Still in the testing phase before taking it to MOT, I need some mirrors too (what is the thread size for its mirrors? I got 7mm on my vernier caliper but is that even possible? can you find original Honda mirros online, or at least look-alikes?)
Anyway, the main question now is: I've noticed while riding it, or when I turn the throttle when it's stationary (rear wheel turning while it's on the stand) that there's a very slight crackling sound which is not from the engine. Just like when you have a loose nut or bolt crinckling from the shake, but I could not for the life of me figure out where it's coming from, and it's not really continuous. I'm wondering if it could be from INSIDE the gearbox/drive/chain thingy.
And I wonder if I have to change the gear oil for that. I took it out today for about 10 miles and it's good. Just worried about what this sound could mean. My friend heard it and said it sounds normal and sweet but I doubt he noticed this crackling that I was talking about. It's ever so slight and I think you'd only notice if you actually rode it yourself.
How do I know I should change the gear oil, and what oil do I use for this Honda???
(and while we're at it, I don't suppose this scooter comes with only a high-headlight bulb, the low-headlight bulb is apparently missing. Where can I find a replacement online?)
Best regards

Get a screwdriver and touch parts of the CVT cover it may just be the rollers rattleing. They do rattle when a little worn or the Variator ramps are a little worn or the guides are worn the Variator Plate which is metal bangs around a little. Alleyoop

Thanks alleyoop. And how much of a problem is that? Should I be alarmed?

No nothing to get alarmed about unless they are really making a racket then I would check out the Variator to make sure the Plastic guides are not broken and or the Variator Metal Studs that the guides slide up and down have not been worn down and causeing to much play between the Plastic guides and the Metal Guide studs. Thanks a lot for your help alley. I think I will have to remove the gearbox/drive cover and take a look inside after all, or something.
I took it out for about 15 miles test, and I noticed that the crackling/rattling sound is increased. Now I'm worried.
Could it just be in need of gear oil? Cus that's the only place left to look at. Or the wheel bearings. I want to change the gear oil anyway because I have no idea how long the oil's been there. Might be new, maybe not. Should I do this first, or after checking the interiors?
And most importantly, I was looking for a Honda gear oil but couldn't find any. Is ANY 80w/90, 75w/90 or 80w/140 oil OK? Which one should I use for my automatic two stroke Honda SGX50?
And one more question here: will such crackling sound, if noticed, affect the result of an MOT test? If I can MOT it, then it will be much easier for me to take to town where I can do some servicing or something.
Note: vehicle is not MOT'ed so the test drive was not on a public road.

I would put in 80w/140 that is a little heavier oil and it sticks to the gears and if they are making noise it will quiet them down. Alleyoop

Well the rattleing sounds I believe are your WEIGHTS like I mentioned earlier. Weights do tend to rattle when worn or the guides might be worn and that causes them to move around and rattle. Also the belt seems to be TO LONG take a look at the size on the belt it will be imprinted on the belt. That is why you have a lot of rubber dust it is bounceing and hitting the inside of the CVT. So take the Variator off and check out the weights and guide and get back on the belt size. I see nothing bad really just some TLC and do change the Gear Oil that is always a mystery never know if oil is even in there. Alleyoop

You're always so quick to answer. If you think it can pass MOT in its current state, I would want to get it past that, and then fix it later as I'm tight on time. I need to use it for University right now, which should really take priority!! I HAVE A DEADLINE!

Many thanks alley! A most useful link! I was about to do just that when I got to the point where I just didn't have a tool to hold the thing in place to turn the nut. I'll figure it out. Now that I've seen the inside of a variator, I think in my case there must be maybe ONE of the weights playing a little bit, and causing that. Now I see it's not serious, but I'll fix it once I figure out how to undo the darn nut. Many thanks!!
