YY250T Non-Starter By dhull (Read 3,103 times)

I have a 2008 Jonway YY250T with about 10,000 miles on it.

Last year my thumb starter switch stopped working, but the lousy remote starter still would do the job, so I began using that. About a month ago the bike stopped responding to the remote also. When the remote was working, the first press of the start button would turn on both green turn indicators and the second press would turn the starter. Now the green turn indicators don't even come on.

The battery is new and fully charged. The dash lights still come on when I turn on the key, but the starter doesn't turn at all.

I bought a new thumb switch, but the new one was a terminal connector type and mine is a two-wire soldered unit. I crossed the two wires and got no response either, so I figured that the switch wasn't the problem.

I stripped off the plastics and replaced the starter relay with a new one, but no change.

Someone suggested checking the voltage at the relay terminal where the yellow/green wire connects and I got nothing.

I'm a real novice at electrical systems, so you'll need to talk to me like I'm a fifth grader.

Welcome to the forum, dhull. The starter switch completes the ground side of the starter relay. This goes to the red/yellow wire on the starter relay. Set your meter to measure resistance. Attach the black lead to the negative pole of the battery and the red wire to the terminal for the red/yellow wire on the starter relay. The meter should read zero or very close to zero when pressing the starter switch. The brake switches feed 12 volts to the yellow/green wire when either brake is depressed once the ignition switch is turned on. Make sure that you have your meter set to measure 12 volts DC and that the ignition key is turned on. You should get a 12 volt reading at the yellow/green terminal when either brake is squeezed.

One way to make sure the brake switches are OK is that the brake lights work when you use either brake.

Let us know what readings you come up with.

On all of the Ohm settings, my multimeter stayed at 1 with and without the brakes being applied.

The yellow/green wire terminal read zero volts with either and both brake levers applied.

Did anything else stop working ? Is everything working horn signals brake lights?

With key on, the following items DO work:

Fuel gauge
Instrument lights
Clock
Horn
Front marker lights (NOT headlight)
Front and rear turn signals (NOT brake lights)

If you squeeze the other brake lights NO BRAKE LIGHTS? So you squeeze EITHER of the brakes and no brake lights and no juice to the Solenoid to turn your starter is that correct.

That is correct. No lights from either brake lever and no starter.

Have you check the plug on the SOLENOID and made sure it is plugged into the harness?

I've unplugged and plugged the harness into the solenoid several times. The fuse looked good but I replaced it also just in case.

The YY250T has the 244cc Honda clone engine. I also own a 2008 model.

I've been gone a lot over the last few days and haven't seen all of this and here is your picture you posted on the other forum where you're not getting the right answers except for Cruiser and he told you right you don't have a vertical 244cc engine, in fact it's a linhai and I know just by the valve cover:



Also by the cover you removed it isn't a reflex clone with a linhai if it is they've changed from my 08 model. Post a picture of your scooter because I believe you have a VOG.

But also since you told me all of the things that work with the key on I'll tell you you don't have a blown fuse either. You've got one of three things wrong.

On most of the linhai scooters there arte two fuses the main 20A one and the 15A by the battery. The 15A one by the battery controls all the accessories:

turn signals
horn
fuel gauge
temp guage
radio ( if it has one)
instrument and license plate lights ( on some models)

Lastly the brake light/starter realy 12Vdc feed. You've done diagnosed the problem, you stated you had no brake lights, no brake lights = no start the starter relay circuit is tied to the brake light circuit = yellow/green wire.

Back to the possible things that are wrong:

Broke wire from brake light switches either the yellow/green to the brake lights or the black 12Vdc feed wire to the brake light switches or where they p[lug in together behind the headlight cowling they have pulled loose.

Bad brake light switch/s

Since it would start with the remote the starter relay is good and now the remote has either been unprogrammed or has a blown fuse. You do not need to depend on it to start your scooter any way.

It's time to get a multimeter out and check for lost voltage and also pull the front off and check the brake light wires.

I'll take the headlight cowling off this afternoon. When I was checking the thumb starter switch, it is quite possible that I loosened the brake lights connection there.

I'd love to get away from using the remote to start up Big Red but for almost a year that's been my only option since I couldn't get a response from the starter using the thumb switch.

I'll take a few photos without the plastics if that will help you identify it. It's a 2008 that I bought used from a guy about 5000 miles/18 months ago.

Are there any guides on removing/reinstalling the patchwork of plastics on these bikes?

Not really just get you some containers to keep all the screws in and if necessary take the before photos for a reference, they help a lot.

You're on the right track because this is a lost voltage problem. When you get the front off find each brake light switch on the brake handles. Follow the wires on each one, you will have a black wire and a yellow/green wire and then they hook up by means of a two way to one way bullet connector on each color. The single black wire feeds 12Vdc to each brake light switch and then the yellow/green sends the voltage back down to the brake lights and starter relay.
