Hey everyone. I have a good friend with a 2012 taotao 50cc scooter. Late last year he developed issues with it.
When starting it will:
Idle high, around 3500rpm and it slows until it dies. You can keep it alive by playing with the throttle.
He's had a few people work on it to no avail.
He has since replaced the carb with a stock replacement. Same exact issues. More friends played with the carb to no avail
I stopped over and richenend the low/idle needle. between richening and playing with the idle speed screw, it now idles at about 2000rpm, but every 10 seconds or so it revs to 2500rpm before coming back down quickly. but it at least idles now and will go down the road. He said it tops out at 6000rpm and will not go above that.
Also when he comes to a stop, it will die unless he plays with the throttle and it eventually idles right.
I know that the low speed needle shouldn't be as rich as it is, it's probably 4-5 turns out from bottomed out.
I downloaded a shop manual and it's not too helpful.
He's a good guy and it's his only source of transportation and I really want to help him.
Tomorrow I plan on bottoming the low/idle needle and resetting to factory specs to see what it does. What do you guys recommend I inspect/perform to get this thing to at least idle properly and stop dying before we determine why it won't reach red line?

That is a Classic case of the valves need to be adjusted. Set them both to .003 inchs then you will have to re-adjust the carbs fuel ratio mixture. They should idle no higher than 1800 rpms usually they will idle at around 1500 rpms once the ENRICHER cuts off the extra fuel when started cold. Alleyoop

Friend is very thankful.
I do have a few questions now. Should we remove the brass cap so we can play with the high speed air/fuel needle?
He said the scooter runs better than ever, said even brand new it would bog a little or fall flat up hill. He said now it'll maintain top speed or fall a few MPH on steep inclines which is better than what it did new.
