Electrical Ignition Help! By churchy (Read 5,205 times)

Ok so first thread, first problem, when i turn the key in the ignition to on i get no power to anywhere, lights, horn, dash, nothing. Therefore my electric start wont work! However one the engine is running (via the kicker) everything works including starter motor! I just dont know what to do about this or where to start, electrics are really not my thing!
any help would be much appreciated.

With this problem forget about fixing the electric start.

OK you didn't say what year this Jog is but the electrics on it are simple and typical of most scooters. From what you said it seems it will not start with the electric starter and since you said it would run with the kick starter then we know the stator, cdi, and coil are good.

This is the wiring diagram from the 91 to 97 Jog service manual:





When you turn the key on you supply power from the red wire to the brown wire and in turn the brown wire feeds both brake light switches #29 & #30 and when you press the brake handle (either one) you send power to the starter relay #11 and the brake lights #17. Then you press the start button #10 and supply ground to the starter relay. The igniton switch #7 is fed by the battery from the red wire which is fused #8.

Possible reasons it won't start electrically

Bad fuse
Bad key switch
Bad brake light switch (either one or both)
Bad start button
Dead battery
Poor grounding especially to the start button
Broke wiring or poor connection resulting in no power being sent to starting components.

While you are waiting on you new parts you can play with this to see what your issue is.

Have you checked the fuse with a meter ?

im confident its a good fuse but i dont see haow id be able to once its in

Then you need to take a volt meter and see if you have 12Vdc + on the ride wire going to the key switch, if you do then turn the key on and see if you have the same 12Vdc on the brown wire, if not then it's the key switch bad. If you have no voltage on the red wire going to the key switch then you have a broke wire or bad fuse.

Oh and it's easy to check a fuse with it in the fuse holder, with your meter it should read 12Vdc + on both ends of the fuse, if not then it's bad even if it looks good and yes that happens.

Looking at a fuse IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH you either TEST IT or just go and buy a new one and replace it they are CHEAP.

Sometimes it takes CAPS to have people take notice and listen. Then again even that doesn't help, and when that happens we get tired of trying to get it through some thick skulls then just give up and loose interest and let them go on their merry way and do whatever they please.

It is pretty obvious what your problem is but sorry to say you just won't listen.
