SOLVED - What PSI is too much PSI? By trailheadmike (Read 647 times)

I had new rear tire mounted by a local shop and after sitting a week I see the tire is flat. I'm assuming its a bad seating job (the guy said it took him 40 minutes to get it to hold air) so I thought perhaps I'd over-fill the tire to see if I could let the pressure do the work.

What amount of pressure do you think might actually do damage to the tire? Its a good tire (michelin) and a new valve too. Thanks in advance.

Could be several things, they did not clean around the rim edge where the tire seals, the valve stem is leaking, bad tire maybe old rubber maybe has a cracks, wrong size tire for the rim or they did not put enough air to make a good seal.

But normally you start filling with air until the tire seal pops into position ususally about 10psi above the max for the tire then you deflat to 10% less than the max the tire says.

Alley cover perty much all it could bei would iflat the tire to what the max psi marked on the tire and use a spray bottle with soapy water in it spray around the tire wheel and valve stem to find the leak it will bubble up at the leak then you will know where it is and be able to fix it

Thanks guys. Just like I did with my bicycle when i was a kid I guess.

I will say that I was able to get a test drive in on the new tire, and all I'll say is that compared with the Cheng Shin, the Michelin gave a really wonderful ride.

did the guy lube the edge of the tire and rim before seating the tire ?
Ge a window planter or aluminum pan , center stand put rear wheel in water turn the wheel and look for bubbles .

I just didn't feel like taking the wheel off again, especially since my power is still out because of Sandy (thus no impact wrench) so before I did I filled the tire up to 40 psi and bounced my fat butt up and down on the seat. By the fifth bounce or so I heard a quick fssssss POP!!!! and that was it - tire fully seated. Thanks as always for all the replies.

You should be able to dip the tire without removing it.

the spray bottle with soapy water in it will work with the tire and wheel on the bike and it would be a good idea to check it spray the tire with the soapy water and see if any bubbles pop up if not you should be good to go
