When you take off the variator sometimes the inner sliding plate moves and the rollers get sloppy and jam in instead of sliding like they are supposed to. Try taking off the variator, put it face down on a bench, take loose the three little bolts holding the cover, lift off the cover and the sliding plate, and make sure the rollers are all set into their grooves right. then put it together but don't move it or pick it up until it's all bolted together. When you do pick it up hold the sliding plate in firmly so nothing moves, and keep holding it together as you slide it on the crankshaft. Slide it on all the way until it's pressing against the engine, then hold it while you slide the big bushing over the shaft and into the variator. You don't want anything to move. When the bushing is in, loop the belt over the crankshaft, press on the variator fan cover and make certain it seats over the splines and all the way until its solid against the bushing. Wiggle the belt so the belt doesn't hold things apart. Then tighten the variator nut. It has to be really tight, 75-90 foot pounds.
Good luck!
