Where is the pipe flange? Are you referring to the intake pipe? I'm replacing that just waiting for the new one to come in (on backorder). The popping doesn't happen until I've dropped some speed then it pops every few seconds until the clutch lets go and it hits idle again. Then when I shut down it does one little *Puh* a couple seconds after I stop the engine.

Yes, that is usually whats happens if it is leaking by the PIPE WHERE IT CONNECTS TO THE MOTOR The part that connects is called a FLANGE. It will backfire as the rpms start to drop when you are coming to a stop or slowing down and you let go of the throttle. There is a Gasket that goes inbetween the Exhaust HOLE and the Flange. Many times the Nuts come loose due to Vibration and Getting really hot and cooling off. Alleyoop

Wait, are we talking intake side or exhaust side? I have the intake coming and yes my exhaust ones seem to keep loosening like every time I ride. Can I use threadlocker on them?

EXHAUST, where the pipe connects to the motor. If the nuts keep loosen up that is most likely where your problem liesl. You can use Thread lock and or TWO NUTS on the studs. Make sure when you tighten them to tighten them evenly. Do not tighten one then the other snuge on up then the other and so on so it comes up evenly otherwise it will be cocked and leak on one side or the other.
And be carefull DO NOT CRANK on the nuts the Studs may snap right off. Just nice and Snuge and evenly tight. Alleyoop

Unfortunately it's the studs that keep loosening. They keep backing out of the head. I'll have to take the nuts off and give it another go probably have to check the gasket too. I'll take a look at it tomorrow morning but it's always been the studs coming out of the head I just didn't know if threadlocker would work on that or not. I have red threadlock here I'll give it a shot see how it goes

Well, so much for THAT idea... Started working on it, replaced the gasket (1/2 of it was missing) went to put the studs back in and the hole in the head stripped out. I have a feeling it's part of the reason it kept backing out. So I'll be heading to a friends place tonight with the bike to get the hole helicoiled. Hopefully I'll get it done tonight or this weekend. So much to do never enough time.

OUCH!! I was afraid of that when you mentioned the studs were the ones backing out. That usually does not happen unless the head is stripped. But but I was hopeing for the best and did not want to mention that and get you worried. But doing a helicoiled job on it is even better because they are steel and not aliuminum. Get the same size Heicoils that the studs are that way hardly any aliuminum will be drilled out. Most Helicoil kits come with the drill and set bolt to put them in. I had to do that to my Tranny Drain hole because it was stripped. Here is the kit I got for that job. But at least you found your backfireing problem. Now check what could have caused the studs to be pulled out. It could be that the muffler is NOT attached to the frame THAT the engine is mounted on. If it is not that would cause a lot of stress and pulling on the Flange if the muffler doesn't move with the motor. Alleyoop

I actually think the studs were pulling out because of the previous owner/work that was done to the bike. Unfortunately this weekend has proven to be more than hectic with me having to get A LOT done here because of a new property manager (long story) so I probably won't get a chance to work on it until later this week at best.
