Looks like oil to me check the valve cover it may be leaking from there. Do you have a hose on the valve cover vent connector? Also check you oil level you do not want to go dry otherwise the motor will seize.

oil was low. i filled up this morning.
i'll have to take some plastic off so i can get a look at everything. i was thinking the valve cover also. i have a new gasket, but maybe i didn't tighten the bolts enough? i read that over tightening on these machines is bad, so i might have to tighten a little.
ugh.

Check the O-RING rubber gasket around the cover of the Valve cover it may not be in the grove and pinched. If so you may need an new one IF it has been broken or flattened out to much letting the oil get past it. Alleyoop

went in and took a look. the chain tension screw had come out. oil can leak if that screw isn't in all the way, right? well, i put it back, filled put some more oil in, and hopefully, that's it.
still not happy with excel, but would rather deal with that when i have to adjust the valves again, which i have heard needs to be done every 500mi or so. that should take me thru august.
thanks for your help. i'm probably going to start looking through the "how to adjust the brakes" posts.

Yes if the center screw is missing and or not tight oil will come out of there or under the gasket that holds the tensioner in place.
