Receiving new scooter tomorrow. Been reading this site and really, really appreciating the information. I'm new but pretty good with mechanics and electronics so would enjoy helping with questions. Have a feeling i'm gonna ask a few. Biggest concern is break in. Going to ride from atlanta to chicago in a week or two. Any recommendations .. and thanks for the site.

Thank you for the kind words and welcome to the forum! Nice scooter you got coming too. Get the PDI out of the tech section and go through her and for sure change all the fluids and oils. Anything you need to know we'll be here for you. That's quite a haul for a scooter but with the proper PDI she'll do fine, I've made round trips to Dallas and back over 800 miles in two days in 100F+ weather. Take her out after the PDI and run her for different speeds from 40 to 55 and get a quick 100 miles on her change the oil again and then ride her at 45 to 60 mph when you start your trip for say the first 50 to 100 miles and then ride her like you want. Be sure to take lots of pictures because we all love a trip and it sites and this also will serve even more notice of how well a Chinese scooter can make the long haul. According to map quest that's 718 miles one way for sure a nice ride, wish I was going with you. We'll be waiting for the pics of that new scooter! JR

so after 140 brand new (fun) miles here are the symptoms: no headlights, no turn signals, no start.. something is draining the battery i think so, i'm in the learning how to troubleshoot scooters mode currently going to be charging the battery and tightening some hardware tomorrow any suggestions would be greatly appreciated i have some nice pics of uncrating and stuff the bike took a pretty nice jolt in the crate during the shipping process (so maybe some loose connections and all)

is there some particular thread where the previous post would draw more attention/response?

All of the symptoms = blown main 20A fuse. The scooter has two main fuses the 20A as I mentioned and a 15A fuse located by the battery.
The 20A fuse is loctated on the starter solenoid relay right above the muffler behind the back right side panel. If this fuse blows the scooter will not make a sound period.
Now the 15 amp fuse is generally by the battery and if it blows you'll not have things like the horn and such nor will it start except one can start it with the remote again provided the 20A fuse is still good.
These are the typical cheap Chinese blade type fuses and should be replaced with good quality fuses all part of the PDI you need to peform.
As far as the charging you need to put the battery on a slow 1 amp or less charger and then test it to see if it holds 12.5 Vdc or better after removing it from the charger for 1 hour. The when it's idling take a volt meter and test the charging output with a multimeter by checking at the battery. With a fully charged battery at idle it should read 13.0 Vdc or better and at 5k RPM it should easily hit better than 14.0 Vdc.

wow
those chinese blade fuses suck i've been measuring opposing voltages on either end of the 15A fuse saying to myself "am i really seeing this" thanks so much again for the charging and problem location help i'm buying: - a replacement battery at a much higher ampere production than the factory (always keeping one charged and taking it with me on the long trip(s) - a handful of good fuses (question re: fuse rating: 12V i assume - appropriate amperage but fast or slow blo? .. probably fast?) - a charger - jumper cables
next in line: the bike needs a tuneup but one quick question: does the bike have a charging system in it?
all said - i like it

Hey reinhardt, I've been thinking of getting the same exact scooter you have, but after reading about your experience, I'm having some second thoughts.
So overall, are you happy with your purchase? And what are some pros/cons about it? Thanks!

Reinhardt you'll find that buying a quality battery is about all you'll need as far as the charging system. I don't own a battery tender and have rarely had to charge my scooter, mainly if I did something like left the key on.
I don't buy the cheap Walmart batteries but rather I put a good quality 14AH/210CCA amp battery on mine and the battery is now 3 years old and still starting just fine. Have went on over 400 mile one way trips and never failed to start, never needed jumped or a second battery.
The charging system in the linhai is strong and very dependable. The only thing I would recommend to you as all of us have done replace all of the common bulbs with LED's, not only will you have brighter and better lights but it will add a lot of charging volts to the battery.

reinhardt, I have a scoot just like yours. Is yours the linhai/yamaha clone or do you have the honda clone?
