And if your 1949 had a misfire, first thing I'd do is spray a mist of water over the plug wires ( poor mans power balance). Then I'd check out the distributor, make sure there's no cracked cap, I'd make sure the point gap was correct, and if that didn't do it, I break out the timing light (provided it has timing marks) or attach a vacuum gage to the intake and time to vacuum pressure. If we still had a problem I'd hook up the oscillascope.
These are all some of the things one would check for sure. This rtells me that your are a well trained and skilled mechanic and if I was telling you about my problem and you told me some of these things you would do and give me your opinion of what is wrong I would feel very comfortable in having you work on my car.
In CT the only people allowed to charge for motorcycle work is trained motorcycle technicians. Technically there isn't a way to legally work on scooters here. (Not for profit anyway)
And this is not a bad thing and I'm sure that this is what people want and expect in your state because if they didn't they would by due process change the system and laws. If I were to move there then I would obey the law.
But if you came here and you and I discussed say this problem on the 49 Ford and I by agreement between you and I decided that I would like for you to fix my Ford and you did a good job and we both liked the results then I would glady pay you a wage that we agreed upon whether it be by the hour or job and and we would do that on a simple handshake of trust.
I'm the kind of person that believes people's time is worth something, their work effort and skills and I want to be treated fairly and in turn will do the same to the person I am dealing with and IMO this what seems to be lost in today's society.
