I just changed out my rear rim on my Vog 260 after hitting a devastating pothole which bent the rim and even cracked one of the spokes. I put it all together and went for a test ride, and then checked it out to see that the rear axle nut and the spacer/washer guy that goes under the nut fell off. Here's where I'm talking about:  I know where to buy the nut, but what is the spacer? Here is a roketa diagram posted recently - is it part #37?? roketa.com/product/parts_detail.jsp?partId=30732&partName=ENGINE Will something bad happen if I ride without it? everthing seems locked in by the swing arm. thanks in advance, and happy holidays to all!!! |

Alley-
33 is the big "sleeve" - that's on. What is missing fits in the space shown and looks like a washer from a garden hose, only bigger.

Well you did mention spacer and #37 is not the spacer, so I would order all those little washer parts for it.

Mike part# 37 is a spacer/bushing. It fits over the shaft and the OD of it fits right to the seal. YOU MUST put it in.
If you don't put this spacer bushing in and you tighten the outside nut you will not only push the bearing out of the sidearm you'll also ruin the seal.

Also remember to loctite the nut....blue will work and check it everytime you think about it...it will come loose even when you use loctite....enjoy the ride...

Locktite is a great idea. Also, I took my boys out and we retraced my steps and found the bushing. Is it supposed to be lubricated at all? If so, with what? It was greasy but in a generally dirty kind of way - hard to tell what was deliberate. thanks all.

ps...it just takes longer to come loose....on the centerstand move the wheel... side to side to make sure the wheel is tight...not a great system...

Mike if you go to the same manual on page 206 you'll see the parts removal diagram. I went and looked at mine and for whatever reason there is no seal behind the bearing from what I could see without removing the swingarm. Are you sure it's just not the outside rubber cover of the bearing? You would think they would put one since they have one on the front right behind the axle nut?
From what I see the layout is as follows:
axle nut
spacer bushing
oil seal
bearing
bearing lock ring
inside spacer bushing
In my post you saw where I simply popped off the outside bearing cover and filled it with quality grease and then put it back, it is easy to do.
But if I wanted a back oil seal, actually it's just a seal to keep out excess dirt because do remember the bearing is a sealed bearing I would just buy another front seal and put it in at the back of the swingarm behind the bearing lock ring. The back spacer bushing is the same OD as the small front one so the inside spacer will go right in the seal with no problem.
This is actually a good idea to farther protect the bearing. Just like with the bearing you can order it online or if you have a good local bearing/seal supplier you could buy them there.

Done. I waited another week for the seal, but I think the reason the old one was so smashed was because someone really crushed to get it in - the crevasse is really just deep enough for the bearing. since the bearing is sealed i ultimately left it out. I cleaned the axle and put on some lithium grease (as per the Yamaha 250 manual) and the bolt torqued right on and there it sits after my test ride.
